Working therapeutically with couples
... a practical human givens guide to improving relationships
lineA one-day course with tutor: Véronique Chown

Course outline:
Every relationship has its ups and downs, but sometimes these become too difficult for a couple to manage on their own.
Véronique Chown's practical course, illustrated with many case histories, looks at the most effective ways to build rapport with and help couples in conflicted relationships. During the day we explore: the sex differences in processing emotions; non-blame talking styles; how the way each person got their emotional needs met in their formative years can sometimes explain why they think and react as they do. How to make interventions that tackle this head on. How to tell when the relationship is not the problem and what to do about it. How successful couples facilitate one another to get their innate physical and emotional needs met.

What you will gain from the day:
Skills to help you to build rapport with two emotionally-aroused people
Ways to help them begin to cooperate in helping each other get their individual emotional needs met
How to teach non-blaming communication skills and explain the differences in male and female behaviour to clients
New ways to facilitate lasting, beneficial changes in relationships
An insight into many common relationship problems; how to help clients to overcome them illustrated with numerous case histories
How to use Solution Focussed Questioning to initiate change
How to use Guided Imagery with two people
Information regarding the latest scientific research into couples therapy – what works and what doesn’t
How to make use of tasks and metaphor

The many useful ways therapists can help resolve issues such as: trust and jealousy (especially after an affair); the stress faced by working parents; boredom; lack of communication; loss of sexual desire etc. Why explaining to couples the basic biological differences in the way men and women perceive emotional and practical problems is often so therapeutic. How to teach couples to talk to each other in a non-blaming way, listen reflectively and learn to understand and accept their partner’s feelings. Teaching couples how to lower their own emotional arousal and to use a ‘diffuser’ to prevent negativity from escalating.

3.30pm – Making lasting changes and valuing the bigger context
How to use guided imagery with couples to keep them motivated, activate their resources and facilitate a process of positive change. Many couples are so busy that they don’t have time to think about themselves. Getting across the importance of evaluating individual emotional needs, as well as the needs of the relationship and the wider family. When the needs of all involved are being met as well as possible then most problems evaporate.
